Maureen was a fan of rough and sporting games when she was a kid and excelled in athletics. It was this passion that was also matched with an unnatural talent for performing. Her talent was exemplified by winning pretty much every Feis award in drama or performances in the theater that her nation offered. Maureen was a part of the Abbey Theater by age 14 which was where she was able to pursue her dream of opera and classical theater. Charles Laughton became captivated with Maureen's stunningly beautiful eyes after the screening test he attended. In the days before she was cast to play on the screen in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton along with his co-star, Erich Pommer, changed her name from Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" which is a shorter last name for the marquee. Maureen FitzSimons' subsequent movie (The Hunchback of Notre Dame - 1939) was scheduled to be shot by RKO Pictures in America under a contract to Laughton. The contract Maureen signed with Laughton was acquired by RKO following the epic film became a huge hit. Maureen was just 19 years old when she made her debut with Laughton in two movies.
